Strategic Sharing For Survival

Whether attempting to outrun the undead (see: They Keep Coming), out for a day hike, headed to the woods for the weekend, or out on a scavenger run, there is always the risk that someone will be separated from your group and end up on their own. It happens every single day. People get separated, turned around, lost and left-behind. And if you think it’s going to get any easier keeping track of everyone after a major disaster… think again.
Splitting and sharing supplies (food, water, etc) is a step in the right direction, but if you want your fellow survivors to be properly prepared, it’s time to look at strategic sharing. When working in groups, no individual should be responsible for carrying all of the medical supplies or food, water, ammunition, tools, etc. Strategically dividing and sharing supplies between party-members doesn’t just remove a literally heavy load from one person’s back though. It means that each individual member can be properly equipped should they or anyone else leave or become separated from the group… and that often means the difference between life and death.
While not everyone has to carry a backup or portion of literally everything, each member should have, at the very least, supplies needed to treat a wound, start a fire, collect and purify water, fill their bellies and protect themselves.
In addition to standard gear and supplies like clothing, lighting, etc., each member of a group should have the following supplies well-stocked and within arms reach at all times.
Food. 3 packets Homemade Re-hydration Drink (see DIY project here), 5 granola or other NON-sugary snack bars, 3 cubes of bouillon, 2 pieces of hard candy, and at least 1 dehydrated, canned meal or MRE.
Water. 1 full 32 oz. water bottle or bladder, 10 water purification tablets, 1 clean handkerchief and one “How to purify water” quick card.
First-Aid. 5 -10 bandages (small, medium, large of each), 6 sterile gauze pads (4×4″ squares), 1 roll medical tape, 1 elastic bandage, 2 Sheets moleskin, 6 Safety pins (3 small, 3 medium), 1 tube antibiotic ointment, 4 antiseptic towelettes, 4 oz. bottle of waterless hand sanitizer (see also: Rubbing Alcohol the Multi-Tool), 1 tube/container lip-balm, 1 pair tweezers, 2 large sewing needles, 1 bandana (can be used as a tourniquet, gauze pad, bandage, sling, sun cover, etc. see also: Hoo-Rag), 2 dust masks (rated N95 or higher), 1 roll dental Floss (non-flavored), 1 emergency blanket (used for treating hypothermia), 1 small tube of quick-dry glue like Super Glue, 1s mall first-aid book/guide.
Fire. 1 Fire-striker, 1 lighter, 25 waterproof matches, 6 fire-starters (see: Little Light Fire Starters) and a water-proof container to store it all in.
Fight. Each individual should carry no less than two of their preferred methods for protection against outside threats, be they Zombie, survivors, wild animal or otherwise. Whether an person chooses firearms, melee weapons, bladed tools, etc or a combination of things, they must have quick access to them and plenty of training and practice. See also:Weapon Safety.
While we would all like to stick together (at least some of us do), sometimes we end up on our own and with preparedness the first line of defense, you’d better get it right the first time. When attempting to survive with a group, no matter the size, strategically sharing supplies will be key to true survival… zombie apocalypse or not. So prepare, pack smart and share your supplies.
