Discretion Or Death

Overgrown porch of houseWe’ve seen it before and we’ll likely see it again: when you have something that someone else needs or wants, they will do their best to take it from you. This doesn’t just include the unknown number of survivors and undead wandering through the world after the apocalypse, it’s an everyday occurrence the world over. People are attacked for their valuables, their supplies, their bodies and sometimes just because… and after an apocalyptic scenario like a Zombie outbreak, it’s likely to worsen before it gets better.
With self-defense a somewhat unreliable and often unavailable last line of defense (depending on the situation), avoidance becomes the first step to staying safe. Whether you’re hiding from the undead, wild animals, other survivors, militias or the in-laws, you can take a lesson from our feathered, furry and otherwise animal friends: It pays to blend in. The advantages of keeping a low-profile are many, no matter what you’re doing or who you are. If your attackers don’t know you exist or don’t see you as a valuable resource, then they are no longer your attackers.
Quick Tips:
  1. Add to your food and water storage discreetly. DO NOT have a pallet of MREs or otherwise delivered to your house in the middle of the afternoon when everyone can see. Add to your supplies gradually with each trip you take to the store.
  2. Secure your location discreetly. Visible traps, alarms, fortifications and other security measures can act as signals that there are valuable supplies inside for the taking.
  3. Black out the lights. If they can’t see you, they wont know you’re there. (see: How to black out the lights)
  4. Only discuss your plans with those you can trust and are willing to share your supplies with.
  5. Artificially age your gear. It’s been proven that people want what’s new and shiny over what is old and dirty. Aging your gear (spray paint, dirt, soot, etc) can help keep the proverbial wolves at bay.
From a low-key home base to keeping your on the move location and everyday preps on the down-low, a simple bit of discretion can go a long way to keeping the more dangerous parts of the world at bay. Leave your tips and tricks for your fellow survivors in the comments section below.
